Zymes is pleased to announce that Volker Berl, Ph.D., M.B.A. has joined its team to serve as Vice President of Global Business & Technology Development. Volker will oversee Zymes’ supply chain and its chemical manufacturing activities. One of his primary responsibilities will be to manage the process development for Zymes’ proprietary technologies and to explore business opportunities in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical market spaces.

Volker joins Zymes with 10 years experience at the forefront of chemical and pharmaceutical research, process development, new business development and equity capital markets research. His experience includes positions at leading organizations including BASF AG, Deutsche Bank, GlaxoSmithKline and Stanford University.

At BASF AG, Volker worked as Head of Process Development Laboratory where he oversaw a variety of manufacturing and process development projects for APIs and nutraceuticals, including the Zymes-lead product coenzyme Q10, on which he holds 4 patents. Subsequently, he was appointed Global New Business Development Manager, where he was in charge of corporate M&A activities for BASF’s intermediates division. He then moved to Deutsche Bank as Vice President and analyst for the German Biotech industry. Volker is highly networked in the industry, and brings a great deal of valuable entrepreneurial expertise to Zymes. He is co-founder of SyncEvolution, a French software company and serves on the board of directors of Gaussin S.A., France.

Prior to BASF, Volker was a research fellow at Stanford University. Volker’s academic profile includes a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from ISIS-University Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France, a M.Sc. in chemistry and chemical engineering, and an M.B,A. from the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He is author of over 20 scientific articles and patents and has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career.
